My handmade computer won't work! I need your help!?

I recently built a new computer with new motherboard, RAM, CPU, Power Supply, optical drive, and video card. As for the hard drive, I decided to use the one that was in my old computer that uses IDE. So when I was done hooking everything up and turned on my computer, everything seemed to be fine until it kept turning off whenever it tried to get to the Windows homepage. Is it my hard drive that is the problem? do I need a new one or is there something wrong with the other components? If it is my hard drive that is the problem, then can I just buy a second one and use that along with the one I have because I really don't feel like paying more money just to get Windows XP or Vista.
