You need to check the CPU Socket types, so as to be sure that your processor is compatible with a particular motherboard.

The motherboard you choose will dictate the type, and amount of RAM you can have. You will want to get either SDRAM,or DDR, and atleast 1 GiG worth for good gaming performance.

The PCI slots on the motherboard, are there to accommodate ad-on cards, such as sound cards, ethernet. Make sure you have enough PCI slots for your needs, and also the number of USB ports you need.

When choosing the best motherboard for your needs, You need to think ahead and decide on what type of graphics cards you will be using because there are 2 different ways of connecting, either through AGP slots or PCI express slots.

Some motherboards come with built in video, sound or networking capabilities. This can save you time and money, and you wont have to buy the separate cards for these functions.
