Replace mOtherboard without re installing XP
You will require a full windows XP CD, or atleast a recovery partition that includes repair option. The recovery CD that sometimes comes with the Computer will not help, unless you create a bootable XP.

I love the ASRock P4VM890 Motherboards, they provide 6 USB ports from its poort panel that appears at the back of the case when the motherboard is installed. You have a wide range of ports to do all your connections.

Knowing the make and model of your motherboard
I never used to know the model of my motherboard, and a friend of mine advised me to use a utility called Belarc Advisor, which creates an analysis of the hardware, and software on a personal computer.

The best motherboard to upgrade to, is that has no inbuilt graphics chip because they are generally not high performance boards.

Never try to use a cheap power supply in a computer, as it is likely to turn out to be a false economy, because when one fails, it can take out the other components.

Choosing the right Processor and Motherboard Combination
Note that motherboards can be revised by the manufacturers to run processors or other hardware that previous models of the same could not run. If you are in doubt, check the manufacturer's website, for their manuals.

After replacing your dead BIOS battery, you may notice that the computer starts to slow down. There are two BIOS settings that always need to be checked. The Processor Clock Multiplier, and the Speed of the front side bus. By using the wrong settings, your computer will run slow.

If you don't want to reset your customized settings when you replace your BIOS battery, you can use your flash utility that you use to reflash your BIOS, since it saves the old BIOS files so that it can be restored if reflashing the BIOS causes a problem.

It is possible to run both types of Intel and AMD processors with a standard ATX power supply with no pentium 4 power connectors, either by fitting an adapter to the standard ATX power connector.
