There are many differences and options when choosing one. There are mobos's from $30 to $1000 so there no all the same.
Finding the options, quality, and specs that you want for a specific build will take some research at the least.
I've been building with Gigabyte boards for the past few years and am very happy. Great overclocking boards!
i like there solid capacitors, layout and cooling features. Dual BIOS and OC functions are very nice too.

I originally used a Gigabyte P35-DS3L when I built my desktop about a year ago. It was on the cheaper side, but I did not mind. However, I found that the highest speed I could boot to was 3.2, but it was extremely unstable. Anything higher than 400 FSB would just about reach vista before freezing up. I decided to settle at a 375FSB which gave me 3.0ghz, a modest overclock from 2.66. From then on even at this lowered speed I would get the occasional blue screen, but I am not 100% sure if it was the hardware and software.
A few weeks ago I caught the review of the Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P and after some thought I decided to purchase it. I really just wanted to see if it was the motherboard or hardware that was setting me back. (...And the extra usb ports, 2 ethernet ports, and the excessive cooling on the northbridge)
So far I am in the process of testing everything around to see where I am at. I will post pictures soon once I get some decent results. I have tested my memory to run at DDR2-900, which gives me a 450FSB to work with knowing memory won't be a problem. The Q9450 is currently running at 3.6Ghz, which I really want to make my 100% stable setting. If I can do this, over the summer I may go for 3.8 or the highly unlikely 4.0.
Currently I have the voltage set at 1.40 and under load that goes down to 1.312v. Temps are currently in the mid-60's across the four cores. I'm happy with anything under 70.
I have left everything on auto except the cpu voltage and the mch voltage, which I have set to 1.060v (or something close) and all power saving features disabled. I might bump the MCH even more since it appears to be just a tad low.
Currently I was able to boot all the way up to 3.8ghz, but when I tried out prime 95, Vista froze (the only time this has happened so far, before going above 400 (let alone 475) would cause insta-freeze)
I am now down to 3.6ghz, and running prime 95 has caused 2 of the 4 threads to fail, but I am going to let the other 2 run overnight and see what happens. I must be getting close to some optimal settings since Vista has yet to freeze. (I am also running F@H GPU)
Some may seem it was a waste to spend $140 on a board, but minus a $20 rebate and selling the DS3L, I think that it was a good investment to essentially get a 1.0Ghz overclock and have a cooler-running system overall.

the P35-DS3L was a killer OCing MB at an economy price. I'm running a EP45-UD3R with good results.

I never use any board aside from ECS. I love ECS boards, no issues what soever that I experienced with this board.

I still have my Asus motherboard that I got back in 2002. My computer was built around Cubase SX at the time.
My MIDI tech guru went down the street with me to this little computer store and told the guy what to build. I've been happy with it overall, although I've replaced a couple of drives.
