Default what are the different types?

How can I determine what type of RAM i need for a desktop and what do the different types mean?

Additionally how much faster will the computer be if I already have around 1 gb of RAM and I want to double it on a Vista? I have installed RAM on computers previously but not any ones that have been made in the last four years.

I'd recommend 1.5 gb or 2 gb of ram (1500 - 2000 MB)...500 is skimpy for vista (not for xp though)

True. I'm running on 512MB for my XP (but this laptop's 2 years old already so there... )

Something around 2 Gb would be good for having a Vista. Remember that the minimum RAM memory for having Vista should be 1 Gb, however having only 1 Gb would stop the PC from working if you are having Vista platform.

Download and run CPU-z, under the memory tab, you can see your ram type which is either ddr1 or ddr2. 2 gigs is a must these days especially with the upcoming windows 7 OS.
