Default RAM limit on Intel 845WM

I've got a ten year old system that runs very well, but I'd like to add some RAM.
The mobo is an Intel 845WM with the 845 chipset, 100 bus, with a Pentium4. XP Pro. Currently I have 3 X 256 SDRAM DIMM PC133 non-ECC.

I recently bought 3 X 512MB ECC strips with the intent to raise the RAM< to 1.5GB. But none of them would let me boot. Not even any one of them alone.

Was it because the system won't accept anything over 256 per strip or was it because they were ECC? The mobo manual says it will accept ECC or non-ECC, but there's nothing in the manual about maximum RAM.

I looked for a BIOS update, but can't find one on Intel's support site or the BIOS maker's site, so I probably have the latest BIOS for that board and chipset.

Does anyone have any insight on this problem?
