The good thing about Avast is its free for about 60. Then you could just send them an email requesting for a renewal. I don't trust AVG since it wasn't able to detect the virus that caused most of my files to be corrupted.

That's a good idea. Does Avast use a lot of RAM?

I always thought that general knowledge is the best anti-virus out there. Besides that Spybot's Tea Times is just amazing. It lets you accept or deny registry changes, BHOs, startup, pretty much everything. The only bad thing is that the average computer user doesn't know when or when not to accept a change. I have been using it for about 2 years now and hasn't let me down yet.

Also the last time I used Avast it slowed my computer down dramatically, and seeing as I love to play games this is a negative.

In terms of antivirus programs there are only two that are in tight competition. these are NOD32 and Kaspersky. I have both tried using those two AV and proves to be the best in protecting your precious computer against any attacks.

When it comes to free antivirus, I highly recommend AVG, Avast and Avira.

Hijackthis and Deepfreeze. Its' like the mother of all antivirus programs. IMHO.

Never use an antivirus unless you want to have a memory hog on your system. Just be careful on what sites you visit and go for Deep Freeze with Hijackthis.
