Default When A Monitor Dies

I've had the old kind of monitor go, and it was pretty obvious that it was deteriorating, but more recently I had a flat screen display start having an intermittent problem of show full screens of green, blue or red. It seemed to happen after it was used for about 20 minutes.

I haven't used it for months. Do you think that was just the way it died, or was there some other thing affecting it? I've been surprised before when some components seemed to "get better" which didn't make much sense.

I replaced my video card before I replaced the monitor, and the problem still happened with the new card.
