If you're cousin have the money to burn then he should get: Reason 4 ( Propellerhead Software)
Reason’s strengths rest in its emphasis on creation, composition and modification. From start to finish, users have a variety of tools, features and effects to create, enhance, master and modify individual sounds, samples, patches and even complete tracks and transform them altogether.

Cons: It cost $399.99

Frooty loops, Korg Collections, Cubase . And of course, quality instruments and mics are needed to get the best out of their recording needs.

I've been using Cubase SX for a few years with some VST instruments like Garritan Personal Orchestra 2, Minimoog V, some free applications from the net and some vintage hardware including keyboards and guitars.

I produce broadcast quality production music that I market online. It's a modest endeavor at this point, but it is growing.

I love Cubase because it has powerful MIDI sequencing and powerful audio editing capabilities.
